Pinealon is a synthetic tripeptide (Glu-Asp-Arg) developed as part of the peptide bioregulator research programme at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, under the direction of Professor Vladimir Khavinson. It is classified as a pineal gland peptide bioregulator, designed to investigate the role of the pineal gland in circadian rhythm regulation, neuroprotection, and age-related neurological decline. Pinealon has been studied in preclinical models for its potential effects on neuronal survival, antioxidant defence, and melatonin-related signalling pathways.
Pinealon is hypothesised to act as a gene expression modulator, interacting with chromatin in pinealocytes and neuronal cells to regulate transcription of genes associated with antioxidant defence, circadian rhythm maintenance, and neuronal survival. Preclinical studies have demonstrated effects on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activity, suggesting a role in attenuating oxidative stress in neuronal tissue. Pinealon has also been investigated for its influence on melatonin synthesis pathways and its potential neuroprotective effects in models of ischaemia and age-related neurodegeneration.
