Acetic Acid Solution 1%
Acetic Acid Solution 1%
Acetic Acid Solution 1% is a research-grade aqueous solution of glacial acetic acid diluted to 1% v/v in sterile water. It is widely used in peptide and protein research as a reconstitution solvent, particularly for lyophilised peptides that exhibit poor solubility in water alone. The mild acidity of a 1% acetic acid solution (pH ~3.4) aids in dissolving hydrophobic or aggregation-prone peptides without denaturing their structure.
Mechanism of Action
Acetic acid (C₂H₄O₂, MW 60.05 g/mol, CAS 64-19-7) is a simple carboxylic acid that protonates basic residues on peptide chains, increasing their net positive charge and improving aqueous solubility. At 1% v/v concentration, it provides sufficient acidity to solubilise most research peptides while remaining compatible with downstream dilution into physiological buffers.
Research Applications
- Reconstitution of lyophilised research peptides (e.g. IGF-1, GH fragments)
- Preparation of peptide stock solutions for in vitro assays
- Buffer preparation and pH adjustment in laboratory protocols
- Protein solubilisation and stability studies
Usage Notes
For peptide reconstitution, add a small volume of 1% acetic acid to the lyophilised peptide, allow to dissolve fully, then dilute to the desired concentration with sterile PBS or bacteriostatic water. Reconstituted solutions should be aliquoted and stored at -20°C to minimise freeze-thaw degradation.
