Glutathione
Glutathione
Glutathione (L-Glutathione, reduced form; GSH) is a research-grade endogenous tripeptide antioxidant composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, developed for preclinical investigation of oxidative stress, cellular redox homeostasis, detoxification, and immune function. As the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in mammalian cells, glutathione plays a central role in neutralising reactive oxygen species (ROS), regenerating other antioxidants, and supporting phase II detoxification pathways. It is supplied as a lyophilised powder for use in in vitro and in vivo research models.
Mechanism of Action
Glutathione functions as a direct free radical scavenger and as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes, which catalyse the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and the conjugation of electrophilic compounds for excretion. The GSH/GSSG (oxidised glutathione) ratio serves as a key indicator of cellular redox status. Glutathione also participates in the regeneration of vitamins C and E, the regulation of protein thiol groups, and the modulation of immune cell function, including T-cell proliferation and NK cell activity.
Research Applications
- Oxidative stress and cellular redox homeostasis studies
- Glutathione peroxidase and S-transferase enzyme activity research
- Phase II detoxification and xenobiotic metabolism investigation
- Immune function and T-cell biology modelling
