ARA-290 is a synthetic 11-amino acid peptide derived from the helix B surface of erythropoietin (EPO), specifically engineered to activate the innate repair receptor (IRR) — a heterodimer of the EPO receptor and the β common receptor (βcR) — without stimulating erythropoiesis or haematopoietic effects. It has been investigated in preclinical and early clinical research for its effects on cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective signalling pathways.
ARA-290 selectively binds to the innate repair receptor (IRR), expressed on non-haematopoietic tissues including neurons, pancreatic β-cells, and immune cells. IRR activation has been studied in preclinical models for its effects on PI3K/Akt and JAK2/STAT3 signalling cascades. Unlike full-length EPO, ARA-290 does not bind the classical homodimeric EPO receptor responsible for red blood cell production, making it a selective research tool for studying IRR signalling independent of erythropoietic activity.
