Oxytocin Acetate

Oxytocin Acetate is the acetate salt form of oxytocin, a synthetic nonapeptide (Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2) identical in sequence to the endogenous neurohypophysial hormone produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. Oxytocin is one of the most extensively studied neuropeptides in biomedical research, with well-characterised roles in social behaviour, bonding, stress regulation, uterine contractility, and lactation. It is supplied here as a research-grade lyophilised compound for in vitro and preclinical investigation of oxytocin receptor pharmacology and neuroendocrine signalling.

Mechanism of Action

Oxytocin exerts its biological effects by binding to the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a G-protein-coupled receptor (Gq/11) expressed in the brain, uterus, mammary gland, heart, and immune cells. Central OXTR activation modulates dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission in limbic regions, influencing social recognition, trust, anxiety, and stress responses via HPA axis modulation. Peripheral OXTR activation stimulates smooth muscle contraction in the uterus and myoepithelial cells of the mammary gland. Oxytocin also demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties through modulation of NF-κB signalling and cytokine release in immune cells.

Research Applications

  • Oxytocin receptor (OXTR) pharmacology and G-protein signalling studies
  • Social behaviour, bonding, and trust neuroscience research
  • HPA axis modulation and stress response investigation
  • Uterine contractility and smooth muscle physiology research
  • Neuroimmune modulation and anti-inflammatory signalling studies
