HCG
HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)
HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a research-grade recombinant glycoprotein hormone structurally homologous to luteinising hormone (LH), developed for preclinical investigation of gonadal steroidogenesis, Leydig cell function, and reproductive endocrinology. Endogenously produced by the syncytiotrophoblast during early pregnancy, HCG acts as a potent LH receptor agonist and is widely used in experimental models of testosterone biosynthesis, spermatogenesis, and HPG axis regulation.
Mechanism of Action
HCG binds to the LH/hCG receptor (LHCGR) on Leydig cells in the testes and theca cells in the ovary, activating adenylyl cyclase via Gs protein coupling and increasing intracellular cAMP. This triggers the StAR protein-mediated transport of cholesterol into the mitochondria and the subsequent enzymatic cascade of steroidogenesis, culminating in testosterone (in males) or oestradiol and progesterone (in females) production. HCG also supports Sertoli cell function and spermatogenesis indirectly through testosterone-mediated signalling, and has been studied for its role in luteal phase support and corpus luteum maintenance.
